Classical Urdu Poetry

The files presented here were made from audio tape recordings produced in 1975 at the Learning Resources Center, under the direction of Professor M.A.R. Barker and Shah Abdus Salam. The tape recordings were prepared to accompany Volume I of Prof. Barker's book A Reader of Classical Urdu Poetry, published in 1977 by Spoken Language Services. The complete texts, Vols I, II are available at the Ames Library of South Asia at the University of Minnesota.

The recordings feature vocalist Ustad Hafiz Ahmad Khan accompanied on the tabla by Ali Qadri. Twenty seven selections from the text are recited, chanted and sung. They were chosen by Prof. Barker to demonstrate the "amalgamation of poetry into the ancient musical tradition of the Subcontinent."

These recordings are made available here for your personal use only. No other use or distribution is allowed without permission from Prof. M.A.R. Barker and the University of Minnesota Libraries. You may download these files for playback on your own computer.

How the Files are Organized

The first recording from the complete set of five is available here. The file names below refer to the LRC original tape number. The digital file creation subdivided each original tape into smaller segments. Those subdivisions are indicated by the letter extension at the end of the tape number. For example, the first Mp3 file made from tape one is named "M528.1A" and the second file made from tape one is named "M528.1B".

Click each file name to download it to your computer. Keep in mind these are large files. Download times can be long. Please contact the Learning Resources Center if you have problems or questions. email to: Scott Spicer
