The Learning Resources Center of the University of Minnesota Libraries collects non-book materials to support instruction and research programs at the University. The center is dedicated to the development of non-book collections and continuously explores advances in educational technology.
The collections at the center are comprised primarily of audio and video tape recordings and DVDs. Materials are selected to enhance the classroom teaching environment and support individual study. The collections cover the scope of university instruction but have a strong emphasis in the humanities and social sciences. Featured are foreign language and English as a second language instructional recordings, along with recordings of English language prose, poetry, drama, and oratory. The center also maintains an extensive core cinema collection of over 900 feature film titles on DVD and videocassette, and more than 2,500 educational and public television program titles.
With the start of Fall Semester 2007, the space in Walter Library currently housing the Learning Resources Center (LRC) will be closed for remodeling. All services will continue to operate from temporary locations in Walter during construction as follows:
- An LRC student employee will be available at the 2nd floor Circulation desk to assist instructors and students.
- Media can be placed on course reserve by filling out the course materials forms or by coming to the Walter basement Reserve Desk.
- Students will pick up media reserves at the Walter basement Circulation / Reserve Desk.
- Media can be booked for classroom viewing on the classroom booking page or by coming to the 2nd floor Circulation Desk at Walter Library for assistance.
- We will continue to make media deliveries to other U of MN locations for the convenience of instructors wishing to preview or use materials for classes.
- Viewing stations will be located in Walter 208, across the Great Hall from the present LRC location.
- Many videos and DVs will be on open shelves in room 208 (arranged by subject classification order), and can be checked out by students, faculty, and staff for 3 days.
- Other media can be paged from storage upon request.
Construction is expected to last about six months. We will reopen as a new, revitalized SMART Learning Commons and Media Center, incorporating many requests received from faculty and students during a review conducted over the past year. The new facility will include multimedia production stations for student use, openly accessible collections of DVDs and CDs, a group viewing room, and peer consulting services for students.
Questions or requests should be directed to Virginia Bach, v-gunv@umn.edu, or 612-625-3934.
